PROBLEMS - A Spidey Fan Story

Description

So, this one was a bit of a beast.

When I finished the 'Makeover' comic, I had people requesting a continuation of the story, and I wrote out and storyboarded a direct sequel to it. But during the process, I felt like it was moving away from the original concept behind these little shorts - which is to have singular one-on-one talks between Peter and someone else in his world, to get a better understanding of him, of his relationship to the Spidey persona, and how outside influence shapes and carries him. So while the 'Makeover' sequel was fun, it was simply more goofy hijinks between MJ and Peter. I still like the idea of it and may pursue it down the road if my horizons for this little hobby project expand, but for now I wanted to focus on a truer conceptual sequel - and so, here's 'Problems'!

I was well aware that I was setting a challenge for myself with this one - environment/perspective shots are something I rarely attempt, but I was keen on getting a lot of city panels in there and pushing my drawing abilities further. I still see ways I can improve, but I'm quite satisfied with my learning curve and the resulting comic.

Drawing it was a very fluid and somewhat chaotic process. I wanted to try a slightly shifted art style from before, and was more or less fed up with lineart at this point in time, so I went for a semi-lineless style but keeping elements of the painted-ness from before. I also wanted it to have a stronger colour identity. Looking back, I'm not entirely happy with how 'Makeover' was coloured, and so this time I did some additional studying of sunset photos and palette tests. Even then, my process evolved between pages, and I found myself going back and reworking previous art to match. In the future I'd like to do less of that, haha. Hoping I can find more streamlined and confident ways to present the art.

The title card was originally going to be a separate image like in 'Makeover' - but due to Tumblr's 10-image limit, it prompted me to fit it onto the first page, which actually made for a pretty fun opening, I think!
Unlike the previous comic, I decided to post this one compiled vertically - I felt it made it easier both for me and readers, as I wouldn't have to post each one and add links back and forth, and you all wouldn't have to load separate webpages to continue reading. Let me know which you prefer!

I think there's a lot of interesting stuff to explore between Johnny Storm and Peter. They both got their powers when they were pretty young, but Johnny is slightly older and more experienced than Peter, so he feels like there's guidance he can pass on. But at the same time, he's grown up in the in-crowd and as part of a team, so not all his advice is guaranteed to ring true. I picture this here as more or less their first meeting, or at least their first conversation as peers. Other heroes aren't big fans of Spidey currently, haha.

Anyways, thanks for reading! If you wanted to check out the first one, it's here: MAKEOVER
